CHAPTER 14

Sayk

The dry wind blew on my face, the stars shining high above, watching me with the eyes of a sentient legion. The deep desert was as unchanging as ever, only this time, as I looked upon the dunes, all I could see were the curves of Janet’s body. As the wind blew above the desiccated land, all I could hear were Janet’s moans of pleasure.

The land that saw my birth had not changed, but I had.

I had found a mate, a center to my dry universe and I would stop at nothing to keep her from harm. Even come back to a place that had ripped apart a piece of my soul.

“You should have brought Rager with you,” Ry said. “He’s a better fighter than I am.”

I shot a glance at him. Ry was the only man I considered a true friend, not only in the human sense, but in the Huugwor as well. A brother in everything but blood.

“Tartarus needs its commander of the Enforcers.”

“Glad to know I’m expendable!” Ry remarked. “After all, I’m only a lowly captain.”

“False modesty doesn’t suit you,” I commented and was rewarded by Ry’s caustic, humorless chuckle.

Silence fell between us again as I turned around, scanning the landscape of rocks and sand.

“See anything you like yet? This is farther than I’ve ever been and way past my comfort zone.”

I didn’t bother looking over my shoulder. Ry couldn’t understand the appeal of the sand, the endless sky, the smell of rocks that hadn’t seen water in a thousand years. He was human and humans did not belong in the desert.

“We won’t go much further,” I answered, refraining from showing my impatience. “I can smell them.”

Ry grunted but didn’t contradict me. It was his best quality, this way of accepting my authority without bending completely to it. As I spoke, movement above a dune caught my eye and I brought our long-range transport to a stop. I extended a hand to Ry, instructing him to stay still. He knew enough not to question me as I jumped from the transport, leaving him behind. I walked alone for another hour before standing at the top of a steep hill, its rocky peak sculpted by the wind.

Embedded into the rock was a black crystal like no other. Its shiny, pure night-colored surface was as black as the depth of space. I reached with two fingers and caressed the stone, feelings rushing through me like a sandstorm. As I touched it, the stone shone in the colors of flame, lighting up from within.

I bowed my head, whispering words whose origins were lost to time. Words of honor and respect, the same words my forefathers had whispered since they arose from the sand into glorious consciousness.

I was here, in the place that saw my first breath, but was no longer my home.

I was at the very edge of Huugwor territory, a place none in Tartarus would dare enter.

“Sayk.” A voice called from behind and I turned to face a Huugwor warrior whose face was as familiar to me as my own.
